MOLASSES ATTRIBUTES
The relatively low estimate of metabolisable energy (ME) reflects the relatively low protein content of Molasses rather than its value as an energy supplement.  High concentrations of soluble sugars in Molasses are an ideal complement to pastures and silages which are very low in soluble sugars.  The sugars in Molasses allow the ruminant to take advantage of the high concentrations of soluble protein that are present in pastures to produce microbial protein and to reduce the need to detoxify ammonia.  The rumen fermentation characteristics of Molasses ideally match those of grass silage to markedly increase the benefit from feeding Molasses.

Molasses is extremely palatable and can therefore be used to:

Stimulate appetite around calving in dairy and beef cattle
  • Act as a vehicle to supply other feeds and minerals
  • Encourage intake to silage
  • Encourage heifers to enter the milking shed
  • Ideal for pregnant ewes
  • Excellent for animals under stress

When poor quality roughages such as hays or stubble are the only feeds available, Molasses can play a unique role in providing readily available energy in the form of carbohydrates for improved rumen fermentation and can also provide a vehicle for the effective inclusion of urea in the diet.  The combination of non-protein-nitrogen in urea and soluble carbohydrates allow:

Excellent harvest of microbial protein
  • Increased efficiency of fibre digestion of the roughage

This capacity to improve the digestibility of poor quality forage represents a major benefit of Molasses feeding. Stock require less feed to achieve the same energy supply to the body.

FEEDING DIRECTIONS
Molasses should be made available to livestock at the following rates:

Cattle
  • Dry Dairy Cows - 400mls per day
  • Lactating Dairy Cows - 300mls to 700mls per day
  • Adult Beef Cattle - 300mls per day
  • Calves & Heifers - 50mls to 300mls per day

Sheep, Goats & Deer
  • Lactating or heavily pregnant - 50mls per day
  • Other Stock - 30mls to 50mls per day
